Bills DE Von Miller hears this iconic 1980s song as a pre-game superstition

Nothing gets the blood pumping like a hit from the early 80s.

And few are as unforgettable as In the air tonightthe debut solo single of the long-time genesis Drummer Phil Collins. The powerful pop song – with a distinctive drum breakdown in the middle – is synonymous with its decade. Its distinctive sound, structure and lyrics ensure that it still resonates today.

It’s a tune that has certainly resonated with Buffalo Bills defensive end Von Miller, who listens to the song in the moments before every game as he laces up his cleats. Speaking to OT7 at his recent Sack Summit in Las Vegas, the 35-year-old explained that listening to the song is his pre-game superstition.

“I absolutely have to listen to Phil Collins’ In the air tonight,” Miller said. “I have to listen to this song before every game.”

We can’t blame Miller for listening In the air tonight before every game – it’s a banger. The chorus and instrumental breakdowns are also quite uplifting and inspirational – we can imagine how it would easily get a pass rusher to go out there and produce at a high level (the rest of the lyrics, not so much).

The song hasn’t helped Miller perform well in the 2023 season, as he totaled just three tackles and zero sacks after returning in Week 5 from a torn ACL in November 2022. His recent performance (or lack thereof) has many around the league wondering if Miller has any profile left, leaving the NFL’s active all-time sack leader “a little bit mad”; he recently told Sports Illustrated that he “shouldn’t have even played” last season.

He is eager to prove his doubters wrong and rebound in the 2024 season. Buffalo’s leadership is confident he can do that. Head coach Sean McDermott recently stated in a podcast: “You can never write off a player or person like Von Miller.”

Buffalo fans would love to see Miller return because they have been waiting for this moment their whole lives… or at least since 2022.
