Dynasty debate: Jordan Love or Brock Purdy

Dynasty debate: Jordan Love or Brock Purdy

Jordan Love

By Steven Pintado @CoachStevenP

Love found himself in a high-pressure situation in 2023. The Packers traded away Aaron Rodgers and installed Love as their starting quarterback after drafting him in the 2020 NFL Draft. Love rose to the challenge, throwing for 4,100 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns.

Love started out hot with three straight games over 20 fantasy points. From week four to week nine, he struggled in every game, scoring under 20 points. Love was QB3 for the final nine weeks of the regular season. He scored over 20 fantasy points in eight of the final nine games.

Love showed off his talent with arm strength, a strength he had in college. He was third in deep ball attempts of 20+ yards. He also finished second in air yards among all quarterbacks. His accuracy was mostly better than expected, as he struggled with it coming out of college. He finished 16th in deep ball completions and fourth in play action completions.

In dynasty leagues, a player who is only 26 years old at the end of the fantasy season is becoming increasingly popular. He will be in the rare situation of having only young players on the roster for another two to three years before someone needs to be paid. That’s an essential component when you have young players who want to improve with another year.

Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs will be considered veterans on his team and reliable options as long as they can both stay on the field, especially Watson. He has second-year players like Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, as well as tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft. All four players shined in their rookie seasons and showed the potential to take the next steps in their development.

Even with the recent signing of Josh Jacobs, I’m not worried about Jacobs taking away Love’s red zone touchdowns. Love was second in red zone pass attempts last season. The Packers were middle of the pack in rushing last year, and signing Jacobs will only improve that offense. If they can get the play action going with Jacobs, Love was one of the better quarterbacks in play action in 2023.

I’m a huge fan of Jordan Love and I think his rise will continue with an overall improved offense. Love has already shown with inexperienced talent that he can be successful for the Packers and fantasy. That inexperience will produce some star players that will help Love in the long run in redraft and dynasty leagues.

Brock Purdy

By Mychal Warmo @DynastyDadMike

First, I want to thank Steven for participating in this Dynasty debate series. It’s always fun to do something like this and I enjoy getting a different perspective on the players. As with all of these debates, I would love to have one of these young, up-and-coming signal callers on my Dynasty squads. With all that being said, I’m giving BCB over Jordan Love. In Brock’s first full season as an NFL starter, he finished as QB6 and threw for 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns for a team considered to be a “run first.”

Purdy also has the youth aspect on his side, as he is two years younger than Love. The Niners are clearly building on Purdy’s youth with the addition of Ricky Pearsall and the extension of Christian McCaffrey. We also can’t forget that Brock has playmakers like George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel at his disposal. I prefer Brock’s passing weapons to Love’s arsenal. Purdy had seven completions where he finished in the top 12 in fantasy points. Of those seven completions, two were QB2 completions.

In most rankings, Purdy and Love are very close, but their costs are very different. Purdy is priced significantly lower than Love. In a recent episode of the Dynasty Nerds Podcast, Purdy scored 3.7 points while Love scored 2.4 points.

Purdy is paired with an offensive genius in head coach Kyle Shanahan. His strategies, turns and movements provide Purdy with ideal scenarios, resulting in him leading all NFL quarterbacks in yards per attempt (9.6), passer rating (113.0) and QBR (72.8).

So the question is, nerds: who are you targeting in your dynasty leagues?
