Nonprofit children’s theater promotes love of theater in Waterbury

WATERBURY, Connecticut (WTNH) – The Brass City in the spotlight!

“We like to say that this company was founded by theater kids, for theater kids,” says Ben Orlando, co-founder and executive director of Greater Waterbury Children’s Theatre, which helps children grow and develop through acting, singing and dance.

“We are a brand new nonprofit theater company in Waterbury, Connecticut,” he said.

The organization is run by volunteers who believe in the arts and believe in giving back to Waterbury. The theater welcomes young, passionate performers from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Orlando said love is the focus.

“We definitely have a heart for the organization and we like to say this is family theater, not just community theater. We treat everyone like they’re our family,” he said.

Hanalei Cocchiola and Jaylah Pacheco – who both star in this weekend’s production of Matilda – agree!

The Greater Waterbury Children’s Theatre teaches the fundamentals of theatre without placing a great financial burden on families.

“We don’t charge a participation fee and we’re bringing community theater to the world in Waterbury. We welcome everyone,” Orlando said. “If you want to be in the show, you’re in the show. We don’t turn anyone away, we work with everyone, regardless of their ability.”
