DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro camera receives approval from the US FCC

Days after the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro was spotted on the United Arab Emirates technology regulator’s website, it has now found its way into the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) database. Is DJI preparing to announce the release date of its new action camera?

In our experience, FCC filings tend to pop up close to a product’s release date. You probably know that the FCC assigns companies unique codes to identify their wireless offerings in the market. Detailed scrutiny by the government agency is required to ensure that each new product that hits the market meets U.S. safety standards and does not interfere with other electronic devices.

When a product receives an FCC code after rigorous testing, it is safe to assume that its public release is imminent.

What’s particularly interesting about the new DJI camera is that it’s the first in the Action series to carry the “Pro” suffix. And that likely means we’ll see a lot of advanced features in the Osmo Action 5 Pro, potentially surpassing GoPro’s flagship Hero 12 Black camera. The Osmo Action 4, which launched in August 2023, was a strong alternative to GoPro, but the new offering could elevate DJI’s lineup with significant improvements.

Speculations revolve around the possible inclusion of a 1-inch sensor, a notable upgrade from the current model’s 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor. This would bring the Osmo Action 5 Pro closer to competitors like the Insta360 One R, which boasts a 1-inch version co-developed with Leica, and the Insta360 Ace Pro with its 8K capabilities. It’s worth noting that DJI’s latest handheld camera, the Osmo Pocket 3, also features a 1-inch sensor.

Additionally, DJI could introduce improvements in battery life and video performance. Expect improved photo modes and possibly higher resolution video recording, which could justify the “Pro” moniker. However, these improvements will likely come with a higher price compared to the Osmo Action 4, which currently retails for $299.

It is worth noting that DJI is expected to launch a new drone in the Air series soon.
