Chris Del Conte on the signing of Jim Schlossnagle: “It’s just one of those things I never thought possible”

Chris Del Conte And Jim Schlossnagle look forward to seeing you again at TexasThe couple previously worked together at TCU from 2009 to 2017, before Del Conte left the company to take the position of athletic director for the Longhorns.

There they made five College World Series appearances, with Schlossnagle twice winning the National Coach of the Year award. He left Fort Worth for Texas A&M in 2022 as the most successful coach in the history of the Horned Frogs.

After leading the Aggies to the College World Series finals last season, Schlossnagle will now work with his old partner ahead of UT’s move to the SEC, something they’ve long hoped for, as the Longhorns AD explained in a recent appearance on SEC Network.

“It’s exciting,” Del Conte said. “We’ve known each other for years. When I went to Texas, the hardest conversation I had was with Jim. He’s a dear friend. We’ve shared families and lives together. We’ve walked every Sunday after church. It’s just one of those things I never thought would be possible, and it’s come true.”

Schlossnagle’s departure from College Station was not without controversy, as he denied he was leaving after the Aggies lost Game 3 of the CWS finals. He said his intention when he took the job at A&M was to “never take another job again,” just one day before his move to Austin was announced.

Later revealed that a deal had been agreed between Schlossnagle and Texas before the start of the NCAA tournament. Del Conte revealed how quickly the whole thing happened after the school knew it had David Pierce.

“When we decided to change, and it happened pretty quickly, it was, ‘I’m going to go and meet him,'” he said. “I’m an old-school guy. If I wanted to meet my wife on a date, I asked her in person. Now they do it on Twitter. I don’t even know how that works. I wanted him to tell me whether he was telling me yes or no.

“We sat there, hugged and talked for about a half hour about how he lost the national championship game and what that meant to him. We’ve been there eight times and I’ve seen what we did at TCU, so if he had told me no, I would have gotten in the car and driven away.”

Now that they are back together, Chris Del Conte and Jim Schlossnagle will look to build on the success they previously had at TCU in Austin.
