According to the Chicago Fire Department, the fire broke out around 6 p.m. in a T-shaped multi-unit building at 2810 West Grand Avenue. The front of the building, which runs north-south at the corner of Grand and California, contains a two-story construction company office building. The rear section, which runs east-west along Grand Avenue, contains two businesses. The west side of the building houses a landscaping company, while the east side houses an auto and truck battery store and body shop.

When the fire broke out, thick black smoke and huge flames were visible even from a distance. About 200 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

The Chicago Fire Department provided an update on a fire at a commercial business on the corner of Grand and California on the West Side.

Firefighters said they quickly identified the structure as an arched truss and steel truss structure, allowing them to go on the defensive. They did not say whether anyone was in the store at the time of the fire, but said no one was injured, including firefighters, and everyone has been found.

The building was a total loss, firefighters said. The car and truck batteries were also still intact and on their pallets.

The cause of the fire and the exact start of the fire are still under investigation. Fire officials believe the fire may have started near the body shop, but cannot confirm this until an official investigation is completed.

At 8:20 p.m. the fire was declared extinguished.

Less than a day ago, a massive fire broke out at a pallet warehouse in West Town. While no injuries were reported, the fire destroyed a nearly 50-year-old family business and continued to smolder and flare up a day later. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
