Chris Antonetti reveals Cleveland Guardians’ plans for transfer deadline

The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching and it is still unclear which teams will be buyers and sellers.

One team that will certainly look for improvements everywhere is the Cleveland Guardian And Chris Antonetti This was virtually confirmed in a recent interview with Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Antonetti outlined the Guardians’ transfer plan on the deadline and spoke openly about the state and needs of the squad.

Understanding Cleveland’s plan for the trade deadline starts with the recent signing of LHP Matthew Boyd. Antonetti talked about what they hope to achieve from their newest left-hander over the rest of the season.

“Our starting lineup is the area where we’ve been the most inconsistent,” Antonetti said. “That was one of the reasons we recently signed Matt Boyd. Matt is recovering from Tommy John surgery. We believe he’ll have an impact for us at some point in August. That’s why we decided to bring in Matt, and we’re glad we were able to get it done.”

Yes, the Guardians need more starting pitchers, but so does more than half the league, and Antonetti is well aware of that. (That might be why Cleveland chose Boyd in the first place.)

“Although we are looking for a starting pitcher, we expect the market to be very tight to get one, especially when you look at how many teams are still in the race, and we expect to be in the mix by the end of the month. It could be very difficult and very costly to get a starting pitcher.”

The biggest need may be pitching, but Antonetti says the Guardians will also explore options to upgrade their lineup.

“That’s an area we’ll continue to monitor. And if there are opportunities for improvement on offense or elsewhere, we’ll take action there as well.”

Cleveland may not have taken any action yet, but it certainly sounds like they will take action in the next month.
