Sam’s Club CEO admits they will copy Costco after the chain does a ‘great job’ with members-only products

A SAM’S Club executive has admitted that the company wants to model its private label after Costco in hopes of improving its brand.

Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas revealed that the company took heavy inspiration from Costco’s Kirkland Signature.

The wholesaler has a competing brand called Member’s Mark, which is a combination of 20 different private labels that Walmart has consolidated over the years.

However, in a recent interview, Nicholas revealed that Sam’s Club wants to emulate Costco’s success with its private labels.

“The club model survives because there are brilliant dealers who focus on making or buying exceptional items,” he told CNBC.

“Costco has done a great job of doing this with Kirkland over the years and we’ve seen it be successful.”

Although both wholesale clubs have roughly the same number of clubs, Sam’s Club had net sales of $86.2 billion in the last fiscal year, while Costco had net sales of $176.63 billion.

To close this gap, Sam’s Club aims to improve its food and merchandise standards by 2025.

This means that customers can look forward to changes such as antibiotic-free poultry and Fairtrade-certified coffee beans as early as next year.

To stay in touch with customers, Walmart has also launched a program where customers can provide feedback on future flavors, designs and more.

“They’re very demanding, like, ‘Hey, this seam isn’t good enough or this seam needs to be better or this needs to be double-stitched or there’s not enough lobster in your lobster mac (and cheese),'” Nicholas said.

“COSTCO IS RIDICULOUS”

One thing that shoppers seem to prefer more is Sam’s Club’s payment options.

“You can’t checkout,” Sam’s Club members warn, as shoppers must pay extra to shop early under store rules

Many customers have taken to social media to criticize Costco for not offering an express payment option like the Walmart-owned wholesaler.

“The checkout line at my local Costco is ridiculous. It’s about time Costco implemented something like Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go or BJ’s Express Pay,” said one Reddit user.

“I’ve used Sam’s Scan & Go a few times and I love it.”

“This is one of the best things about Sam’s. I wish Costco would do something similar. I hate the lines at Costco,” claimed another user.
