MASON, Michigan – To mark the 113th anniversary of trapshooting, I’m Ava Zanglin, your local reporter for the Michigan Trapshooters Association, where this centuries-old tradition is supported by a growing community.

Trap shooting is a sport in which precision and skill play a role.

“It’s one of those things that captivates you,” said Mark Bristoll.

The Michigan Trapshooters Association opened its doors to trap shooters on Tuesday for its annual Michigan State Shoot.

“It’s my favorite hobby. I love shooting with my friends,” said Frank Clark.

This year marks the 113th year of the event and four to five hundred community members are expected to attend.

“My whole family shoots,” Bristoll said.

Allows trap shooters to have a friendly competition that is open to everyone.

“It’s the safest sport there is and it’s open to everyone,” said Jeff Russell.

Club manager Jeff Russell said the MTA preaches safety and is shocked at how many people are unaware of the association and the sport.

“There’s the high school clay pigeon shooting league, the Michigan Scholastic Clay Target League, the AIM program, and we’re expanding because of youth shooting. In the state of Michigan, the program is actually growing,” Russell said.

The following week, the MTA hosts the High School Clay Target League National Championship.

“We will bring 6,000 people to the area, which will have a huge economic impact,” Russell said.

This is actually an impressive achievement, as trap shooting has been a popular sport for many people for many years.

“Not everyone can play football and baseball, but everyone can throw,” Russell said.
