According to the Israeli advocacy group Peace Now, Israel is about to approve or pre-approve the construction of more than 6,000 new housing units in dozens of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Two days of talks on the massive expansion plan are scheduled for today and Thursday by Israel’s High Planning Committee, the defense body responsible for settlement planning, after which approval is expected, Peace Now reported.

“It is clear that the main goal of the current government, from its decisions to its actions, is to destroy any possibility of a political solution between Israelis and Palestinians,” the advocacy group said.

“Since the beginning of the war, the Israeli government has focused all its efforts on construction, development and investment in construction projects throughout the West Bank,” it said.

“The ongoing settlement construction, as well as the decision to build new settlements deep in the West Bank and the transfer of planning authority from the military to officials of the far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, will lead to a catastrophe for Israel and the region,” the group added.

“This is a government without any public support and it must be overthrown to save us from total destruction and perpetual war.”
