Arahi: “We have seen better days”

Arahi: “We have seen better days”

Arahi is back with his first solo music release in over a year and a half.

The beautifully atmospheric song reflects longing for better days while missing the present. Arahi’s subtle sound invites listeners to explore vast, lonely spaces while still feeling connected.

“Normally, you only start to reminisce fondly about the past when you have the perspective of time to do so – but even when you are aware of this, you rarely give in to the thought that the ‘good old days’ may still be ahead of you every day,” he says.

“This is the song of someone clinging to ‘better days’ and not realizing that he is actually missing them here and now.”

Arahi was inspired to write the song at last year’s Taite Music Prize ceremony in Auckland. He was touched by Warren Maxwell’s comment that he had “seen better days” when presenting Paul Huggins with the Independent Spirit Award. Huggins, who was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer in 2022, founded Rough Peel Music and Rough Peel Records and has owned Real Groovy Records in Christchurch since 2008.

“Warren begins to reminisce and ends with the words, ‘We’ve seen better days.’ It was a moment that was felt throughout the room and that stayed with me.”

The song is accompanied by a music video created by SportsTeam, which shows Arahi wandering through the city at night, bathed in dark shades of blue and black.

“Sometimes the writing and recording process goes so fast that I barely have time to really think about the song, but shooting a music video early in the morning and listening to the song over and over again really helped me immerse myself in it and live it on camera,” says Arahi.

“The music video dances between the present and the days we fondly remember. The harshness of a solo journey contrasts with the warm memories of hiking with a companion, portrayed in this music video by Liv Tennet.”

Recorded partly at home and with Jol Mulholland at The Lab, the song marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Arahi following his debut EP Revealer in 2022, recorded at Roundhead Studios and produced by Dave Khan.

“A common thread in my work as an artist is people and especially their stories. I consider myself a storyteller and music a vessel. ‘We’ve Seen Better Days’ is another important story that helps us better understand ourselves and others,” he says.

“We’ve Seen Better Days” by Arahi is out now.
