Telecom Egypt deploys Eneas Voice Firewall to protect subscribers from caller ID spoofing fraud

Telecom Egypt successfully protects its subscribers from caller ID spoofing fraud.

Since Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s largest telecommunications provider, deployed Enea’s Voice Firewall to protect against fraudulent calls and unwanted robocalls, over 90% of inbound calls with fake caller IDs have disappeared from its network. When the firewall solution was first deployed, over 8% of all calls were identified as fraudulent and blocked immediately. This has had a deterrent effect on fraudsters who now no longer target the network, resulting in a reduction of approximately 90% in spoofed calls on the network.

According to GASA (Scam Alliance), phone calls are the most common channel for fraud attempts worldwide, a sobering fact that underscores the importance of robust security measures in the telecommunications sector. Like many other countries, Egypt suffers from phone fraud, which uses spoofing to deceive subscribers about the identity of the caller. Caller ID spoofing is when a subscriber receives a call and is not shown the number from which the call is being made. Fraudsters use this method to conceal their identity and make subscribers believe the call is genuine. It is often used to impersonate banks or government agencies, facilitating the first steps of a financial fraud or theft of personal information.

To protect its subscribers, Telecom Egypt has deployed Enea’s Voice Firewall, a state-of-the-art solution based on a zero-trust approach. It detects and blocks all spoofed calls entering the network, ensuring that only genuine calls reach subscribers. Fraud is prevented in advance, before potential victims are reached.

John Hughes, SVP and Head of Network Security Business Group at Enea, said: “The global threat intelligence we collect and analyze shows that caller ID spoofing is increasing worldwide, affecting millions of subscribers and businesses each year and undermining trust in communications systems. With its proactive approach to network security, Telecom Egypt is demonstrating strong security leadership, backed by its commitment to protecting subscribers from harm.”
