Amid the Kevin Costner feud and the problematic “Yellowstone” finale, the future of Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming spin-off already looks bleak

The Yellowstone The universe is constantly growing, with new spin-offs and seasons being added every now and then. The credit for this goes to Taylor Sheridan, the brilliant director behind the camera lens who debuted the popular show on Paramount Network in 2018 and radically redefined the family drama genre.

But with credibility comes a number of criticisms, and even Sheridan is not immune. The director has been heavily criticized for his choices recently, and the future of his upcoming spin-off already looks bleak.

Taylor Sheridan’s increased focus on spin-offs

The director is a cowboy at heart, owns several ranches and horses, but his fixation on working on several projects at the same time is equally clear (currently 11 projects in various stages of production over Business Insider). While this may work for some, it usually backfires for others.

This focus was one of many reasons why Kevin Costner, who has been associated with the series for five years since 2018, will not appear in the upcoming final episodes of Part 2. In an interview with GQCostner announced that Taylor Sheridan, Paramount and 101 Studios were all involved in various Yellowstone Originals and spin-offs at the same time. He explained that for Sheridan:

other shows became more important.

The biggest on this list is a spin-off based on 6666, his Texas ranch, also known as the Four Sixes, which Sheridan owns. This idea first made headlines in 2021 and was set to debut in 2023, but there is no word yet on when the show will air. In a previous interview with The Hollywood ReporterSheridan explained the reasons for the delay, saying:

“This requires a unique level of special care for a number of reasons, because this is a real place with real families working here. You have to respect the lineage,” he said. “I told (the studio) to be patient.”

While the delays have undoubtedly affected the show’s popularity, viewers on Reddit have their own views on why they suspect 6666 will not be as popular as Yellowstonewith one fan commenting:

There could be a number of reasons why the upcoming spin-off will not appeal to viewers. In addition, Kevin Costner’s departure has Yellowstone World.

This would be further exacerbated by how his character John Dutton is portrayed in Part 2 of the final season: Will he be killed off (as shown by Sarah Atwood’s intention to make Jaime Dutton the next governor of Montana by deposing John Dutton) or will his role be recast? The series’ followers and loyal viewers are not prepared for either.

Kevin Costner’s obvious feud with Taylor Sheridan

Off-screen conflicts are normal in Hollywood, but when it comes to a famous show, they quickly make headlines. That’s what the alleged feud between Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner was all about. There were several reasons for Costner’s exit from the show, but the main one was a conflict in the shooting schedule for his project Horizon: An American Saga (above Dexterto).

In addition, the actor opposed the division of the fifth season into two parts. In an interview with Deadlinehe dealt with the same topic and revealed:

“At some point they wanted to change something. They wanted to do 5A and 5B; (that) had an impact on Horizon. I wanted to do my movie Horizon and leave the show, do my movie and then do B. A show that I had only done once a year, I was now doing twice.”

In the meantime, Sheridan managed his ever-growing TV shows and a lot of Yellowstone Spin-offs are in development and he may have been too busy to personally handle the situation.

But in an interview with The Hollywood ReporterSheridan told his side of the story and added:

“He (Kevin Costner) and the network were arguing about when he might be finished with Yellowstone. I said, ‘We can certainly work out a timeline for (his preferred exit date),’ which we did.”

There were several discussions and negotiations with the actor, but ultimately he decided on the path that suited him best.

Yellowstone is now streaming on Peacock and DirectTV and is available to buy or rent on Amazon, Apple TV, and Google Play Movies. Part 2 of the series is scheduled to premiere on November 10, 2024.
