Woman killed by homeless man, police say

A 74-year-old woman was pushed into a moving BART train at Powell Street Station and killed Monday night, BART police said.

Shortly after the incident, officers arrested 49-year-old Trevor Belmont, also known as Hoak Taing, on the platform at Powell Street Station. Police described Belmont as a “homeless person,” another word for a homeless person. The incident is the first homicide on the BART line this year.

The incident occurred around 11:06 p.m. Monday as a train bound for Millbrae approached the station. The victim struck her head on the train and fell to the platform. She was taken by firefighters to San Francisco General Hospital, where she later died, police said. The woman’s identity has not yet been released by the coroner.

The victim “was pushed onto a train and is now on the platform,” a woman can be heard saying on the BART police radio posted on YouTube Monday evening. “We have an ambulance on the way.”

“We’ll need more units for that,” said a male voice in the recording.

BART police said they are currently investigating, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the incident.

Belmont was booked into the county jail at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, where he remains. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and assault on an elderly person likely to cause great bodily injury. He also did not have a ticket, according to BART police records.

Public records show that Belmont lived under the name Taing on 31st Avenue in San Francisco from 1998 to 2000.

This is an evolving story.
