East Hampton, NY – Join us for an exhibition of Chris Kelly’s paintings and sculptures at the Leiber Collection on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23 from 1-4 p.m. An artist reception and discussion on “The Paradox of Truth and Beauty” will be held on Sunday, June 23 at 4 p.m.

By Chris Kelly:

“The hidden geometry of nature has been a constant source of inspiration for my work, especially in the form of the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence. With this new series of paintings and sculptures, I have combined my interpretation of this geometry with my general philosophy of art.

I believe that art should be about the triumph of beauty and the human spirit, directly or indirectly. My ultimate goal as an artist is to create works of art that bring beauty into the world.

For me, creating art is a metaphor for how one should approach one’s life both physically and conceptually. I always enjoy searching and discovering how things are connected and while I am constantly inspired by the geometry of nature, I delve deeper into how it not only connects humanity to the natural world, but also how it connects us to each other.

This geometry is an essential part of who we all are and how we understand the way the world works. It speaks of something elemental and primal that is undeniable once you know how to look for it and how to find it.

Someone recently asked me what I think about when I paint or create sculpture. My answer was immediate and I said, “Life and death.” Because while I strive to create artwork that hopefully brings joy and inspiration to others, for me it is based on the ever-present duality of the struggle for life that all living things on this planet face. Creating something beautiful is a counterpoint to the potential tragedies in life and I want to inspire others to feel the same.”

The focus of Chris Kelly’s artist talk and discussion is the common thread that runs from the use of the Golden Ratio in art to the ongoing debate about Keats’ famous quote “Beauty is truth”.

Chris will discuss the connection between the two and how they continue to inspire his work and how they are applicable to art in general.

What did Keats mean? Examples of beautiful artwork that are “untrue” will be part of the discussion, and there will also be examples of artwork that is based on truth but is not conventionally beautiful.

Come along, enjoy refreshments and join a discussion on this fascinating topic led by artist Chris Kelly.
