Club América triumphs over Tigres and wins the Supercopa de Mexico

It was the first edition of the Supercopa since 2019, when Cruz Azul, a club from the capital, also won.

Away from all the hustle and bustle of the Copa América, Las Águilas won their first trophy of the season with a victory over Tigres in the opening game of the Mexican league.

The game was a first look at Tigres coach Veljko Paunović, who recently took over the coaching job after a stint at Chivas. As for América, eyes were on André Jardine after news emerged this week that he was leaving The selection to replace Lozano as national coach.

With the Liga MX Apertura upon us, Club América is preparing to add another Liga MX title to its two from last season. Their first test is against Tigres, the last team to win the title in the summer of 2023.

Both sides fielded weaker teams as many of their stars were away on foreign assignments, either at the Copa América or the European Championship.

The match, played in California, saw Tigres open the scoring with the first goal of the match. Juan Brunetta capped a great team performance with a close-range strike. The underdogs built play on the right flank and played top-notch direct football. Fernando Gorriarán charged towards goal and played a perfect pass to Brunetta, who missed his first attempt but took advantage of a great opportunity when new signing Rodolfo Cota from León failed to hold on to the shot.

América equalised 15 minutes later when Javairo Dilrosun, on loan from Feyenoord, scored from 25 yards. A sea of yellow and blue erupted as their team took advantage of a poor defensive pass and quickly played the ball to the Dutch winger, whose effort took a dangerous deflection and beat the diving Carlos Rodríguez.

From that point on, the game took a turn and América dominated proceedings. Less than ten minutes after the equaliser, they took the lead. Alex Zendejas took a perfect cross from Dilrosun to the far post and passed it straight in front of the goal for Henry Martin to score from close range.

Many believe Martín was unfairly left out of Lozano’s Mexico squad, but he made his absence clear by contributing a goal and an assist as América won its third trophy in eight months.

The reigning champions now travel to San Luís for their opening game of the Apertura, while Tigres host Necaxa looking to recover from a disappointing result.
