Pakistani singer Ali Sethi, known for his soulful voice and stirring music, recently sparked a discussion about LGBTQ+ representation in the South Asian country. In a subtle but powerful move, Sethi marked the end of Pride month on Instagram with a message that many interpreted as his coming out as queer.

Rumors about Sethi’s sexual orientation have been circulating for years, but this recent post appears to be the first time the singer himself has spoken publicly about it. Sethi shared a photo from his youth with the heartfelt caption: “Hi little one. I know it’s hard sometimes when they tell you not to be yourself, but the very things that make you different become a source of tremendous beauty and strength. Love awaits you #happypride.”

This message resonated with fans and was perceived as a subtle affirmation of Sethi’s identity. Although it was not an explicit coming out, the timing combined with the language used was widely interpreted as such. The hashtag #happypride further reinforced this understanding. This actually sparked a debate on social media. While many applauded him, some criticize Sethi for his post.

Ali Sethi is a Pakistani artist with a versatile career as a singer, songwriter, composer and author. Sethi is a classically trained singer who rose to prominence with his debut with Coke Studio Pakistan in Season 8. He has lent his voice to soundtracks for films such as The reluctant fundamentalist (2013) and Manto (2015). In 2019 he performed as a soloist at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. He is currently working on a record with producer Noah Georgeson.

Over the years, Sethi has seen a rise in popularity. However, in 2020, he experienced tremendous growth after “Pasoori’ with Shae Gill, which led her to unprecedented fame. The song was the most searched song of 2022 on Google. He has several hits to his credit, including ‘‘Ranjish Hi Sahi’, ‘Chan Kithan’, ‘Ishq’, ‘Chandni Raat’ among others. He released his new EP Paniya last year. In 2023 he performed at the Coachella Valley Festival.
