Michigan dairy teens adapt to HPAI restrictions

At fairs and state dairy shows, the current restrictions to contain the spread of influenza A among dairy cows are being implemented.

Kendra Van Order, a dairy science teacher with Michigan State University Extension 4-H, tells Brownfield that every county in the state has been affected in some way.

“We hope that this can be a more inclusive opportunity for youth and that it will be more equitable for them to participate in the milk program, regardless of the size and scope of the milk program in their county,” she says.

Van Order says attendance at the Michigan Dairy Expo has dropped significantly and judging competitions will continue even without dairy cows in milk production.

“We hope this is a short-term situation, but I think we cannot predict the exact timing of the impact of this virus, as we have learned from the pandemic,” she says.

The Michigan Dairy Youth Programs were offered alternative competition opportunities this year, and Van Order says adjustments can be made at individual fairs and exhibitions to meet program needs.
