Costco faces recent recalls and class action lawsuits

The recalls affect products the retailer sells, including portable chargers, cookie dough and cheese slices.

Consumers had filed class action lawsuits over claims regarding in-store and online pricing and the sale of Kirkland-branded fragrance-free baby wipes that allegedly contain health-hazardous levels of PFAS.

Portable chargers sold at Costco recalled due to fire and burn hazard

Portable charger maker myCharge issued a recall in June for more than 560,000 myCharge Power Hub All-In-One 10,000 mAh portable chargers sold at Costco.

The company initiated the recall due to concerns that myCharge portable chargers may overheat during charging, creating a fire and burn hazard.

Costco received 115 returns of the recalled portable chargers, according to the recall, in which customers mentioned Melting, expanding, smoking, fire, burning, exploding or sparking.

myCharge said it has received five reports of incidents related to the portable chargers, including two reports of house fires that caused approximately $165,000 in property damage, according to the recall.

Cookie dough products sold at Costco are part of the recall due to possible salmonella contamination

Baker Rise Baking Company released the recall in May due to possible salmonella contamination concerns. The Food and Drug Administration has since upgraded the recall to a Class II recall.

Baker Rise distributed the recalled cookie dough products in 21 U.S. states and sold them at retailers such as Costco and Sam’s Club, among others.

Costco recalls Tillamook cheese slices after plastic is discovered

Costco issued a recall for certain Tillamook Colby Jack and Tillamook Monterey Jack cheese slices in early June after Tillamook discovered pieces of plastic in a limited quantity of Monterey Jack cheese. used to manufacture the recalled products.

The recall These are Tillamook cheese slices with a best-before date of October 22, 2024, produced for Costco stores in the Northwest United States.

“As part of standard food safety and quality assurance procedures, Tillamook has identified a very small amount of gray and black plastic pieces that may be present in a limited quantity of Monterey Jack cheese,” Costco said in its recall notice.

In a letter to Costco members, Tillamook explained that the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution. The company advised customers not to consume the recalled cheese slices and to return them to their local Costco store for a refund.

Costco falsely promises to disclose whether an item is cheaper in store than online, class action lawsuit claims

A Costco member filed a class action lawsuit against the retailer earlier this month, claiming he falsely promises disclosure to inform customers whether an item is cheaper in the store than on the website.

The member argues that despite the alleged promise, Costco increases the prices of products sold on its website but then fails to inform consumers about it.

“Despite its express assurances, Costco routinely omits this essential message and, in these cases, fails to tell consumers that they are paying more for a product sold on Costco.com than if they had purchased the exact same product in-store at their local Costco warehouse,” Costco’s class action lawsuit states.

Costco sells fragrance-free baby wipes with health-endangering levels of PFAS, class action lawsuit says

Two consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Costco in June for allegedly marketing and selling Kirkland-branded fragrance-free baby wipes that uncertain values of PFAS.

The class action lawsuit, which also names product manufacturer Nice-Pak Products Inc. as a defendant, argues that Costco makes its Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes, Fragrance Free Baby Wipes, only from natural ingredients, even though they allegedly contain PFAS.

“Defendants market the product claiming to provide certain health, safety and convenience benefits, even though testing has shown that the product actually contains significant amounts of unsafe, toxic PFAS chemicals,” Costco’s class action lawsuit states.
