WATCH: WWII bombers visit Allegheny County Airport

The Flying Legends of Victory Tour landed at Allegheny County Airport (AGC) last week, giving aviation enthusiasts the opportunity to get an up-close look at two World War II aircraft: Maid in the shadow, a North American B-25 Mitchell and Sentimental journeya Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.

The vintage aircraft were exhibited at the AGC from June 25 to 30 and were available for tours and rides.

Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona acquired its B-17 in 1978 after using it as a firefighting aircraft. In 1981, Airbase Arizona acquired its B-25; prior to its current role as a show aircraft, the B-25 was used as an insect killer in the southern United States.

Both aircraft have been brought back to life after extensive restoration, said Mike Garrett, tour director of Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona.

“We have spare parts and there are FAA repair stations that can also make parts, new parts to replace the old ones,” he said. “We have a way to get parts for both of our aircraft.”

The planes are on a 24-week cross-country tour because it’s too hot to fly in Arizona during the summer months, Garrett said. “They’ll fly to some cities on the East Coast and in Canada before returning to the western part of the country.”
