Tory student group apologizes for dancing and singing to the Nazi anthem

The University of Warwick Conservative Association (UWCA) has issued an apology after footage emerged of student members singing and dancing to the song “Erika”, a Nazi anthem, at the group’s annual dinner last month, British media reported on Monday.

“Erika” was an anthem of the German Nazi forces during World War II. It was composed in 1938 by Herms Niel, a leader of the Nazi Sturmabteilung.

The use of the song was criticized by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS). They accused the students involved in the incident of having “blatantly and excessively supported” National Socialism.

Condemnation of the use of the song

“The glorification of Nazism has no place in our society, especially on campus… We expect swift and decisive action from the University of Warwick and the Conservative Party,” the UJS added in a public statement.

The UWCA said it “condemns the behaviour shown in this video and apologises for any offence it may have caused.”

It continued: “The song Erika was played for a short time. When we realized which song was being played and what it stood for, a board member spoke to the DJ and the song was immediately turned off.”

“We later found out that the song was requested by an individual member directly from the DJ. We stress that it was not included in the pre-planned music selection that was given to the DJ.”

According to Sky News, footage from the event showed several members dancing and singing to the song. The video was cut off after a student was heard shouting: “Don’t film!”

A spokesman for Warwick University said Jewish News “We have been made aware of this video and the allegations associated with it, which are extremely disturbing.

“Such behavior is reprehensible and we are disappointed that our students are involved.

“The university is reviewing the material that was sent to us through our reporting service and has notified the student union. We have requested a meeting with the Jewish Society to assist us in our review.”
