Michigan State Laws Regarding Fireworks for the Fourth of July Independence Day Celebration

Since the Fourth of July is just around the corner in our country, it is important to remind people of the rules for setting off fireworks.

It’s July in the United States, which means there will be one thing in particular: fireworks. Individuals, cities, towns, businesses and more will be lighting and setting off fireworks for the Fourth of July to celebrate our nation’s independence. But as with most things that pose a potential danger, there are many laws surrounding fireworks.

Here’s what you can expect regarding fireworks laws in Michigan:

When can I set off fireworks in Michigan?

There are only a few times of the year when Michiganders are allowed to set off fireworks. And while you can use fireworks to ring in the New Year and celebrate Memorial Day and Labor Day, we’re focusing on the Fourth of July celebrations.

The Fourth of July Independence Day celebrations allow fireworks to be set off daily from June 29 through July 4. If July 5 falls on a Friday or Saturday, the fireworks display is technically on July 5.

Fireworks can be set off anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. Remember, if you hate fireworks being set off at ungodly hours, it’s still legal before 11:45 p.m. Bath Township Police sum it up in their Facebook post.

Where can I buy fireworks in Michigan?

You must be at least 18 years old to buy fireworks, but this does not apply to “low-impact fireworks” such as sparklers, crackers, firecrackers and bangers.

Otherwise, people old enough to purchase fireworks can do so at any licensed establishment.

Where can I set off fireworks in Michigan?

If you’re looking for a place to set off fireworks, that can be a little trickier. If you live in a suburb with a relatively high population density, you may not have much yard space to set off fireworks. Remember that even if you do, you are NOT allowed to set off fireworks on public property. That means streets and sidewalks are off limits.
