Green Lantern, that’s Greenlight.

After several years of development and a major change in creative direction, “Lanterns,” an adaptation of the DC comic book character “Green Lantern,” has received a series order from HBO.

It will be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plan for a new, interconnected series of films and shows and was included in their big announcement last year.

What is the story of Green Lantern in comic form?

The first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) was created in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger. The concept of the Green Lantern comics is that of a super-powered police force that fights villains using rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns that patrol the known and unknown universe.

“Green Lantern’s history on screen has been very mixed. Although various versions of the character have been successful in animated films and TV series, their live-action counterparts have been less fortunate. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 film that was a box office failure, and there have been fleeting appearances on the small screen.

Even Zack Snyder failed to get his dream Lantern – John Stewart – in his mammoth Snyder Cut of Justice League. Although he filmed a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character due to the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder replaced him with Martian Manhunter.

Gunn has Nathan Fillion play the incarnation of Guy Gardner in his “Superman” film, which will be released on July 11 next year.

And the show was already in development before Gunn and Safran made their big announcement. In 2020, Seth Grahame-Smith of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies jumped on board to write and direct what would be HBO Max’s (as the streaming service was then called) most expensive series to date, a Green Lantern drama set in space that would focus on Alan Scott and Guy Gardner’s interpretations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

Lanterns centers on the characters of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. New recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops who find themselves drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the heartland of America.”

Who is working on “Lanterns”?

Chris Mundy, whose credits include Netflix’s “Ozark” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” is the showrunner of the new series, working with “Watchmen”‘s Damon Lindelof and DC Comics writer Tom King (whose “Supergirl” comic is the basis for the new film featuring the character).

They have been given the green light to produce an initial eight episodes as part of a direct-to-series order.

Here’s what DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran said about the news:

“We are thrilled to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a fundamental part of the unified DCU that we launch next summer with ‘Superman.'”

When will “Lantern” be in theaters?

HBO has not yet confirmed a release date for the series, but since filming hasn’t been completed (or the cast hasn’t been finalized), we wouldn’t expect it before late 2025 or sometime in 2026.
