INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Surveillance video shows a vandal ripping open the gas tank of a theater group’s vehicle, causing $2,000 in damage.

It happened early in the morning of June 23 at the IndyFringe Theater on St. Clair Street.

Max McCreary, IndyFringe’s director of audience engagement, said the Fringe on Wheels vehicle is used to bring performances into the community. “We use it to work with performers and bring artists into neighborhoods, public schools and libraries. Wherever we need art, we can go if we have our vehicle with us.”

IndyFringe, a nonprofit theater, primarily presents local artists from a variety of genres, including opera, Motown, jazz and stand-up comedy.

“We are here for anyone who is looking for a place to do what they want to do,” McCreary said.

McCreary said the van is crucial to the organization’s flagship event, the Indyfringe Festival on August 15, which features 250 shows over 11 days.

“Especially with our mobile unit, most of these artists are locals. They are our Hoosier artists who are doing everything in their power to share their work with other Hoosiers like us.”

Therefore, McCreary said the person who did this deprived the community of the opportunity to enjoy the arts.

“When this specific decision is made, it will impact not only our organization, but also the communities we serve and our audiences who look forward to seeing us,” he said.

As of Monday afternoon, IMPD said no suspect had been identified in the case.
