Kevin Costner says he had an ‘ugly’ row with the royals after Princess Diana’s death | World News

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner recently admitted he was involved in an “ugly” row with the royal family after they “turned on him” following his claims that Princess Diana was in talks to star in a sequel to The Bodyguard shortly before her tragic death in 1997.

The Oscar winner admitted that the royal family was skeptical about Diana’s alleged approval to appear in the sequel to the 1992 film, which originally starred Costner alongside Whitney Houston.

During an interview for the Howard Stern Show, Costner said: “After Diana died, word leaked out about a year later that I was preparing ‘Bodyguard 2’ with her. And then the royal family turned against me a little bit. Like, ‘No, that’s not true.’ And it actually got pretty ugly. And I let it go for a while. It just got uglier and uglier.”

The 69-year-old told how he asked Sarah, Duchess of York, who had actually introduced him to Princess Diana, for help. “Finally, I called Sarah and said, ‘Sarah, you have to tell me who’s taking the lead on this.’ She said, ‘No, no, no, Kev, you don’t want to talk to them.’ I said, ‘Yes, I do.'”

Costner then called those involved and insisted: “I’m telling you something, you have to stop doing this because it’s true. And if you don’t stop, I’m going to start doing it. Because it was true.”

Costner could not replace Princess Di for the sequel to “Bodyguard”

At the time, Princess Diana was separated from King Charles III, then Prince, and estranged from the royal family. Costner said: “I started talking to her about Sarah and said, ‘Look, I’m going to do Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build that around you. Would you be interested?’ She said, ‘Yes. My life is going to change.’ I didn’t really go into detail, but I thought I understood what she was saying.”

Years later, the “Yellowstone” star met Diana’s son, Prince William, who expressed his belief in the story. Costner recalled: “We met in a room. There was no one in the room. I sat across from him and he looked at me and said, ‘My mother fancied you.'”

Later in the interview, Costner also recalled Diana’s “very sweet” behavior, especially during our “second conversation,” when she asked, “Will there be a kissing scene?” Costner replied, “Do you want there to be?” Diana said, “Yes,” to which Costner replied, “Then we’ll do it.”

“I didn’t want to make the whole romance about her. But eventually the moment came when we did. And she was so sweet about it.”

He made it clear that the sequel would not focus exclusively on a romantic relationship.

After Diana’s death in a car accident in Paris in August 1997, Costner decided not to shoot the sequel, saying: “I couldn’t replace Princess Di.”
