Whitmer endorses Biden and says he can win Michigan

MICHIGAN – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer reiterated her support for President Joe Biden after a Politico report expressed skepticism that Biden could win the state in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

“I am proud to endorse Joe Biden as our nominee, and I stand behind him 100 percent in the fight to defeat Donald Trump,” Whitmer said in a statement Monday. “Not only do I believe Joe can win Michigan, I know he can because he has the revenue: He has reduced health care costs, brought back manufacturing jobs, and is committed to restoring the reproductive freedom women lost under Donald Trump.”

Whitmer, a rising star in the Democratic Party, made the statement after the Politico report said she warned Democrats that Biden had lost Michigan after he stumbled during the debate with Republican frontrunner and former President Donald Trump.

The report cited “someone close to a potential Whitmer rival for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.” However, a Whitmer aide told the Associated Press that the statement was untrue.

Whitmer’s support comes at a time when many, including the New York Times editorial board, are calling on Biden to drop out of the upcoming U.S. presidential race after his lackluster performance in the debate.

Whitmer is being discussed as a possible candidate to succeed Biden should he resign. Others under discussion include Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Biden, 81, has not indicated he is considering dropping out of the race. The Democratic Party will nominate its candidate at the party’s convention in August.
