13-year-old boy makes history: He publishes the first book on skin care for black children

Nationwide — 13-year-old Bron Echols has made history as the first author to publish a book on skin care for black children. Wash your “T” and close your eyeswhich he co-authored with his mother, Patrice Tartt Chappelle, is a wonderful and educational book that aims to change the perception and practice of skin care among children, especially black and brown children. A few weeks after the book’s release, the duo also received a $2,000 grant for the company.Wash your “T” and close your eyes tells the story of a little boy named Bron who begins his school day with the morning routine of washing his face and brushing his teeth. However, Bron soon realizes that regular soap, water, and his mother’s lotion are not enough to care for his youthful skin. Enter the magical MelanFairy, who teaches Bron the importance of proper skin care, starting with washing the T-zone of his face. The MelanFairy’s mission is clear: to instill in all children a love of their skin and teach them how to care for it. By highlighting the essential importance of skin care for children and offering a relatable and magical narrative, this book is poised to become a milestone in children’s literature and skin care education.

The book was featured on Reedsy.com/discovery and the reviewer had this to say: “I loved it! This informative and superbly written story explains why and how to care for your skin, the body’s largest organ!”

Beautifully illustrated and full of practical skin care tips, Wash your “T” and close your eyes offers a charming narrative to help keep children’s skin healthy and moisturized all year round. Bron and Patrice aim to teach young readers good skin care habits and show that taking care of skin is important at any age, especially in the early teen years.

Bron emphasizes the uniqueness of her message, explaining, “There are many books about the Tooth Fairy, and even some about how children love and embrace their hair, but there are no children’s books that talk about, focus on, and teach proper skin care and the importance of taking care of your own skin.”
