We have all been waiting for summer in Southport and last week it finally arrived! The sailing program is in full swing and the Junior Officers held the first Ice Cream Social of the season. A cool and windy day on Saturday provided intense competition in the turnabout races. On Saturday evening, rain began to fall as 120 members of the SYC family gathered for the Commodore’s opening reception. There was a plentiful supply of appetizers in the Senior Building and drinks further down in the Junior Building. All age groups were well represented including a lemonade stand run by some enterprising young sailors. The weather could not dampen our spirits!

The coming week includes 4th of July celebrations and a busy weekend. The SYC membership meeting will be held on Saturday morning, July 6th at 10am. All are welcome. Saturday afternoon, the Firecracker Turnabout Race will be held at 1pm. A chance for revenge! Join in – all ages are welcome.

Sunday, July 7th is the club cruise to Spectacle Island. Sail, row, paddle or putt your boat. Pack your picnic and join us between noon and 2pm. Anchor on the east side of the island and we will help you get ashore. Plan to get your feet wet as you wade the final steps. It will be a relaxing time to enjoy lunch and explore the island with friends. Monday and Tuesday are also busy. Monday starts at 9am with coffee on the deck while the new students take the swim test. Monday night at 7pm is the first book club of the season with a discussion of “The Women” by Kristin Hannah. Bring a beverage and join us for a chat and a view of the sunset over Cozy Harbor. Member Brunch returns to SYC on Tuesday morning at 10:30am for a delicious potluck.
