When I was a kid, it wasn’t summer until Mr. Softee came by. The ice cream truck meant our best days were still ahead of us. When we heard this song, it was like the neighborhood came alive again. Even today, whenever I hear the Mr. Softee theme song, it still brings back basic childhood memories.

If Mr. Softee didn’t help you grow as a child, I’m so sorry. No other ice cream truck compares. I’m sorry if this offends you and your childhood sweetheart, but I’m going to die on that hill.

The story of Mr. Softee in South Jersey

The company’s origins date back to 1956, when brothers William and James Conway founded the Mr. Softee brand in Philadelphia, PA. The concept quickly spread, and by the early 1960s, Mr. Softee trucks were a familiar sight throughout the greater Philadelphia area, including South Jersey.

In this part of the Garden State, Mr. Softee’s trucks were particularly popular during the summer months and continue to be so today, serving residential areas, parks and events.

This jingle is one of the hardest tunes to get out of your head. However, since it brings back so many wonderful nostalgic memories, I don’t mind keeping it in my head.

What I didn’t know until a few days ago was that Mr. Softee’s theme song isn’t just a melody. It’s a whole song… with lyrics.

How could I not have known until my 30s that when I heard the truck coming, I could have seen real words and not just “da da da da da da da da da da da, da da da da da da…”

How crazy is that?? This is from a commercial that children wanted to see and hear on both TV and radio in the 1960s. You rarely hear the lyrics to the Mr. Softee theme song these days, but they exist!
