What is the KUOW book club reading in July?

This month’s KUOW book club will be reading Subduction by Kristen Millares Young.

Young’s debut novel tells the story of a Latino anthropologist who seeks refuge in Neah Bay, but her search for solace on the Makah Indian Reservation puts her on a collision course with a family searching for answers about their father’s death.

Subduction caused quite a stir in the literary world when it was released in 2020, and I imagine that quite a few of you will be familiar with this title. So we’ll dive deeper into the text as you read and, spoiler alert, conclude with an in-depth interview with the author herself (exciting details to follow)!

Here is the reading plan:

  • Read the first 12 chapters of 15th of July.
  • Finish the book by 29th of July.

As usual, I’ll be offering my own analysis of the book on each of the dates above and sharing reader feedback in our book club newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter here and send me your thoughts and questions at [email protected]. (I read and respond to all letters personally.)

One more thing before I let you read: I want to know what you want to read! I have chosen our book for August, but I invite everyone in the club to September Vote. I’ll include the survey in every newsletter over the next few weeks, so make sure you’re signed up.

You have the choice:

Cast a vote for your favorite title and I’ll announce the winner in early September. Thanks for helping to make this book club great, and happy reading!
