July 1 (UPI) – An injury prevented Normani from taking the stage at the BET Awards on Sunday, the singer said.

“I’m more frustrated and disappointed than anyone else,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “Believe me.”

Normani, who had previously been a member of Fifth Harmony, had released her first solo album, Dopaminejust a few weeks before the scheduled performance.

“I enjoyed the recording process, but I was like, ‘Put me on stage,'” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m ready to perform, I’m ready to do the videos. That’s my bread and butter. And that’s what gives me the most joy.”

But during her BET rehearsals, she sustained an injury after “a really bad accident.”

“I’m usually good at persevering under any circumstances, but unfortunately due to my doctor’s instructions, I’m not able to perform this feat,” she said.

Normani, 28, did not elaborate on what exactly happened or describe the exact nature of her injury, but posted a photo of herself on crutches.

“I really wanted to give you my best on stage, but performing would delay my recovery,” she said. “I’m devastated and I hate to disappoint you, but I need to focus on my recovery now… There’s nothing I wanted more than to perform for you and also get back to doing what I find most fulfilling – being on stage.”

She added: “This is definitely not how I imagined this weekend would play out, but rest assured I will be cheering everyone on from home tonight.”

During the awards ceremony, Usher was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Killer Mike received the Album of the Year award for his album, Michael.
