Man charged with manslaughter in hit-and-run incident in Hartford

Melvin Daniels is charged with manslaughter in connection with the hit-and-run death of a toddler in Hartford.

HARTFORD, Connecticut (WTNH) – A Hartford man has been charged in the death of a toddler who died in a hit-and-run crash on New Britain Avenue last month, Hartford police said.

Melvin Daniels was charged with second-degree manslaughter, evading responsibility resulting in death and illegally tinting his windshield. He turned himself in Monday on a felony warrant.


The charges stem from a hit-and-run accident that occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on June 3 in the area of ​​36 New Britain Avenue.

Hartford police said they received several 911 calls reporting that a toddler had been hit on New Britain Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found 19-month-old Camila Elizabeth Ramirez-Carcamo unconscious in the street. She was taken to Connecticut Children’s, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

According to police, the toddler escaped through the open door of the 24-hour laundromat “Top Kat” while his parents were in the house.

The vehicle responsible was later determined to be a black 2013 BMW 328xi registered in Connecticut, which was found the next morning behind a McDonald’s in New Haven.

Daniel’s bail was set at $300,000.
