BMW 6 Series revival: New coupe and convertible line in the works

BMW will revive its iconic 6 Series name for a new range of coupes and convertibles expected to launch in the second half of 2026. The move is part of a strategic realignment to replace both the current 8 Series and the gasoline-powered versions of the 4 Series, according to a recent report from Automotive News. With this revival, the 6 Series will arrive in the U.S. market as a 2027 model.

The reintroduction of the 6 Series represents a reversal from BMW’s previous strategy, which saw the 8 Series take over the 6 Series’ position for the 2019 model year. This change underscores BMW’s ongoing efforts to refine and optimize its model lineup in response to market trends and consumer preferences. Despite the 8 Series’ relatively low sales volume in North America – just 5,751 units last year – BMW recognizes the importance of maintaining niche models in its portfolio. In contrast, the 4 Series had a stronger market presence with 50,777 units delivered during the same period, in part due to the availability of an electric variant.

The upcoming 6 Series models are expected to be based on BMW’s versatile CLAR platform, which supports petrol, hybrid and possibly electric powertrains. This platform flexibility is in line with BMW’s broader strategy to offer a wide range of powertrains across the range. However, it is still unclear whether the new 6 Series will also include an electric option. The next generation 4 Series, however, is expected to switch entirely to electric power, reflecting the industry’s trend towards electrification.

The revival of the 6 Series was already hinted at in previous reports from 2022, which assumed that the 8 Series Coupe and Convertible would be replaced by a new 6 Series. Interestingly, these reports suggested that the 8 Series Gran Coupe would remain and possibly become part of an expanded 7 Series family. This strategy would allow BMW to cater to different customer preferences while streamlining its model lineup.
