The famous tennis tournament takes place from July 1 to 14 and attracts some of the biggest names in the sport.

The sports stars fight for the titles in the men’s, women’s and wheelchair categories – in singles and doubles.

The official title of the competition is “The Championships”, but it is often referred to simply as Wimbledon because it takes place in southwest London.

It is so popular that it often attracts major celebrities and members of the royal family.

What makes Wimbledon so special?

It’s British and full of history!

The first championships took place in 1877 at the All England Club in London, where they are still held today.

It is famous for its strawberries, which is believed to be related to the season in which it is played and the history of the tournament.

Viewers are expected to eat about 2 million strawberries each year.

Who are the favorites to win?

Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s singles last year and Marketa Vondrousova won the women’s singles, so keep an eye out for them.

There are also some young talents to keep an eye on.

20-year-old Coco Gauff could cause some surprises in the women’s tennis matches – as could Mirra Andreeva, who turned 17 this year.

Among the men, Jannik Sinner is currently in first place for 2024.

A few big names are missing. It is the first tournament without the famous Williams sisters and without Rafael Nadal.

Which Brits should we look out for?

Britain’s Andy Murray hopes to be fit for the tournament and find “some closure” before retiring later this year.

You may also know Emma Raducanu; she is hoping for a good tournament in the women’s singles.

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid are among the favorites in the men’s wheelchair doubles.

Jack Draper is currently in form and recently beat last year’s Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Look out for other Brits including Dan Evans, Cam Norrie and Katie Boulter.
