Tennessee Baseball faces Texas A&M in College World Series final
OMAH, Nebraska – Tennessee State baseball will face Texas A&M in a battle for the College World Series title.
The No. 1 Vols (58-12) and No. 3 Aggies (52-13) will play in the CWS finals starting Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). It will be the third time in the last three seasons that two SEC teams have played for the national championship, and the meeting will mark the fifth consecutive year that an SEC team will be champions.
Tennessee and Texas A&M played in the SEC Tournament on May 23. The Vols won the only meeting between the two teams this season, 7-4.
Vols coach Tony Vitello was an assistant coach on Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle’s staff at Texas Christian from 2011-13.
How the Tennessee Volunteers baseball team reached the final of the College World Series
Tennessee started its College World Series with madness. The Vols scored four runs in the ninth inning and beat Florida State 12-11 on Friday on a walk-off single by Dylan Dreiling.
UT beat North Carolina 6-1 in its second game on Sunday to start the CWS 2-0 for the first time in program history. On Wednesday, they beat Florida State 7-2 to reach the finals for the first time since 1951.
How Texas A&M reached the final of the College World Series
The Aggies also had a thrilling first game, with right fielder Jace LaViolette stopping a potential two-run home run in the ninth inning on Saturday that could have given them a lead. Texas A&M beat Florida 3-2 in that game before beating Kentucky 5-1 on Tuesday and eliminating Florida on Wednesday.
It is the first CWS finals appearance in Texas A&M history.
