Shipwreck of the Epanomi in Thessaloniki: 33-year-old Briton dies while diving at famous Greek tourist destination

A British tourist died in “rough seas” while diving at a famous shipwreck in Greece.

The 33-year-old man was reportedly pulled from the water over the weekend at the Epanomi shipwreck, a popular diving site about 50 minutes’ drive from Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

Local media reported that the unnamed man died after jumping into rough water due to bad weather.

Other people on the beach notified local authorities when they realized he was in danger and was pulled from the water by another swimmer.

Rescue workers, including an ambulance and a rescue boat, rushed to the scene of the accident, but resuscitation attempts failed.

According to local media reports, the Michaniona Port Authority is investigating the incident and an autopsy is being performed at the nearby Hippocrates Hospital.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and are in contact with local authorities.”

A coastguard official told The Sun: “He was swimming when the weather changed and it started to rain. A lifeboat and ambulance were immediately sent but by the time they arrived he had been pulled from the water unconscious.”

The Epanomi shipwreck is frequently visited by divers who want to get a glimpse of the remains of the ship that sank while transporting soil in the winter of 1970. It lies just off the coast of one of the most popular beaches near Thessaloniki in northern Greece – a hotspot for international tourists.

This is the latest death in a series of tourists who have died in Greece and on the Greek islands.

Earlier this month, TV doctor Michael Mosely died after disappearing on his way back to his accommodation on the island of Symi.

At least six others have died or disappeared since his death.
