Man charged in death of cyclist during chase from Phoenix to Tempe

A 33-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder and other charges after he drove away from a domestic violence incident in Phoenix, struck a bicyclist and then crashed his vehicle in Tempe, authorities said Tuesday.

Jamarr Dwayne Young is in custody and being held on $500,000 bail. His trial is scheduled for October 1, according to the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office.

Around 8 p.m. on May 16, Phoenix police officers responded to a call to a home near 6200 South 16th Street due to a domestic violence call.

They found Young, “who was immediately aggressive toward officers,” according to a Phoenix police press release.

According to police, Young refused to comply with officers’ orders and got into his vehicle, which was parked in front of the house.

“Young drove his car at high speed toward several officers and rammed a fully marked police Tahoe to create an escape route,” the police press release said.

The suspect drove away north on the 16thth Police said she was on the street leading from the house and away from officers.

As Young was traveling north on the 16th,th Street, he caught a man who was crossing the 16th Road on a bike and continue north on 16th Street.

The cyclist died at the scene of the accident.

Officers located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to stop it, but he refused to stop and a chase began.

“Officers continued the pursuit until Young’s driving became so erratic that the pursuit was terminated,” the police press release said.

Police said Young eventually crashed into a fence at a construction site in Tempe, near the intersection of Interstate 10 and US 60. He tried to flee but was caught by police.

The young man attacked the police officers before he was handcuffed, the press release states.

He was charged with the following:

  • One count of premeditated murder.
  • One count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
  • One count of fleeing from police without permission.
  • Two cases of grievous bodily harm.
  • One count of resisting arrest.
  • A case of domestic violence.
