The Paranormal Liberation War is the climax of My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is at its best when heroes and villains are brawling, and when it comes to that, Paranormal Liberation War’s story arc is nearly unmatched. The story arc itself is complicated, with a lot of moving parts to consider, but somehow it all flows so perfectly that you can’t help but be drawn into the story.

The Paranormal Liberation War story arc begins with the heroes planning a raid on two locations known to harbor villains. They are located dozens of miles apart and scheduled to take place simultaneously. While things initially go well, a series of misfortunes leads to Shigaraki, who was supposed to be dead, suddenly waking up and wielding the powers of All for One. He summons Gigantomachia to his side, who leaves a trail of destruction between the two locations while transporting the League of Villains to Shigaraki.

The heroes are on the defensive and can only fight back the villains thanks to everyone’s efforts.

Each incident leads perfectly to the next

One of the things this story arc does incredibly well is the feeling that each event is directly caused by the event that came before it. It feels like dominoes falling, something that can’t be stopped once it starts.. What starts as a simple raid spirals out of control when Dr. Garaki releases Nomu, resulting in the revival of Shigaraki, who wipes out the city and then summons Gigantomachia, who turns the tables at the other location and then destroys everything between the two locations.

Fortunately, this doesn’t just apply to things that go wrong, and this idea of ​​a chain of events leading to a major outcome is one of the themes of the story arc, most clearly visible in the efforts to stop Gigantomachia. Midnight tries to get close to Machia but is rebuffed, so she calls the students, who manage to drug him (but apparently not enough) until he arrives at Shigaraki’s location, where he is tied up by Best Jeanist and beaten by Endeavor until the drugs finally take effect, numbing the titanic terror. Without the individual efforts of anyone, there would have been no hope of stopping Machia.

All of these events create a series of truly incredible action scenes, and the entire war arc is thrilling to watch as a result. The action never feels forced; everything is a direct and logical consequence of what happens in the story. What makes it even more exciting is that Deku unlocks not one, but two new Quirks stored in One for All, giving him some fun new abilities to use. If you didn’t know there were more chapters or episodes after this, you could easily think this was the thrilling finale.

Many characters get the chance to save the day

The war arc is also an important moment for many characters. Hawks kills Twice and makes a very difficult decision that ultimately serves the greater good, no matter how slimy he feels about it. Tokoyami gets to save Hawks and has to come to terms with the fact that his mentor did something so dark. Momo gets to lead the students of Class 1-A and shows how much she has grown since she was frozen at the sports festival. Uraraka has her moment of confrontation with Toga, which is a big change for both of them.

Bakugo’s sacrifice and the revelation of Todoroki are perhaps the greatest moments of all. Bakugo saving Deku would have been almost unimaginable 50 chapters ago, but it shows how much he has matured and how he is starting to truly understand what it means to be a hero. Dabi’s reveal, although some have guessed it, is still one of the biggest twists in the series, leaving Endeavor so stunned that he literally can’t move.. Shoto proves his heroism by not letting this bother him and focusing on the mission at hand, as so much depends on their victory.

However, there are some characters who lost out, and that’s especially true for the heroes who died in the line of duty. Midnight’s death is so fuzzy that many readers weren’t sure she was dead until the students found her lifeless body. Most of the other heroes who died were practically extras, so their deaths don’t have much of an emotional impact on the audience. Mina is also robbed of a great character moment, which for her is instead given to Kirishima, for whom it’s far less significant.

This storyline also deals with the aftermath of the war. This includes characters who deal with what they have done and experienced in ways that are often not seen in shonen manga.. It’s clear that Hawks, for example, is genuinely plagued by a guilty conscience for killing Twice even when he had no other choice. Endeavor is shown in the hospital crying over the Dabi/Toya situation, a moment of vulnerability and the true beginning of Endeavor’s redemption. While there is a lot of physical recovery, the story doesn’t shy away from the emotional recovery that is needed as well.

Overall, the Paranormal Liberation War arc is undoubtedly the highlight of My Hero Academia. Packed with jaw-dropping action scenes, incredible twists, and killer cliffhangers, the story arc is sure to keep fans hooked every single episode. While the story arc isn’t perfect and characters like Midnight mess up, the overall quality is high enough that these moments can be forgiven. Many fans have been eagerly awaiting Season 6 as this story arc has been adapted, and the anime adaptation definitely manages to do the manga justice by enhancing these moments with great music and stellar performances in both Japanese and English.

If only one could read My Hero Academia Then the Paranormal Liberation War arc is the right choice.
