Is a new DJI action camera coming? Osmo Action 5 Pro spotted online

Tech giant DJI may soon unveil a new action camera, the Osmo Action 5 Pro. This information, which came to light through a regulatory filing discovered by a DJI leaker, suggests a potentially significant improvement over its predecessor, the Osmo Action 4.

The leak comes from Igor Bogdanov, who discovered the new product on the website of the United Arab Emirates Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. The information has not yet appeared in the database of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The fact that the new DJI action camera will carry the “Pro” label suggests improvements that could include many more advanced features, putting it in direct competition with GoPro’s flagship Hero 12 Black. The Osmo Action 4, due out in August 2023, was a strong alternative to GoPro, but the new model could add significant improvements to DJI’s offering.

Speculations revolve around the possible inclusion of a 1-inch sensor, a notable upgrade from the current model’s 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor. This would bring the Osmo Action 5 Pro closer to rivals like the Insta360 One R, which boasts a 1-inch version co-developed with Leica, and the Insta360 Ace Pro with its 8K capabilities. It’s worth noting that DJI’s latest handheld camera, the Osmo Pocket 3, also features a 1-inch sensor.

Additionally, DJI could introduce improvements in battery life and video performance. Expect improved photo modes and possibly higher resolution video recording, which could justify the “Pro” moniker. However, these improvements will likely come with a higher price compared to the Osmo Action 4, which currently retails for $299.

DJI is expected to launch a new Air series drone soon.
