Athletic Club claims Nico Williams is happy at the club despite growing interest

Athletic Club Bilbao insist Nico Williams is happy to stay at the club this season, despite increasing interest in his services this summer. Williams is valued by a whole host of clubs for his performances, but the Spanish club believe the player is not interested in leaving the Basque Country at this time.

The 21-year-old has been one of the standout players at EURO 2024, helping his Spanish side to the quarter-finals last night with a beautiful goal against Georgia. Williams previously had interest from Chelsea, who felt the financial resources involved in a potential deal would be too much for them this summer. Barcelona are another club interested in the player, but so far there has been no formal offer from any side.

Bilbao relies on Williams:

Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte stated a few days ago that the player is happy at the club and AttackingFootball sources have received further information that suggests that this continues to be the club’s stance. Bilbao considers Nico a key player and expects him to be in the squad for the first matchday of the new La Liga season.

The player has a £49 million release clause that has not yet been invoked by any club. Manchester United have the player on an internal club list in case they decide to sign a right winger, but at this stage that position is not a priority for Erik ten Hag’s side in this transfer window.

Williams scored eight goals and provided 19 assists for Bilbao last season, capping off a remarkable campaign at just 21 years old. His aim now is to help Spain win the European Championship, with their next match against Germany on Friday.

He is a sought-after object this summer, but Athletic Bilbao believe he will not disappear in the coming months.
