Misty, hot and an update on Beryl (and Chris)

FORECAST HIGHLIGHTS:

  • It is too early to say whether Beryl Texas will bring rain

  • Tropical Storm Chris formed overnight and is not a factor in the forecast.

FORECAST:

Good morning! Yesterday’s sudden showers were nice to see, at least for a lucky few. We don’t expect to see them on the radar today as it will just be hot, hazy and humid. This haziness is due to the Saharan dust. A cloud will work its way through today and tomorrow. In general, we expect temperatures around 38°C and humid this week.

For your Fourth of July plans, expect partly cloudy skies and heat index values around 105° during peak temperatures on Thursday.

TROPICAL UPDATE:

Tropical Storm Chris formed overnight off the coast of Mexico and immediately moved inland over eastern Mexico. It will bring heavy rainfall, but other than slightly higher swells along the coast, impacts on Texas will be minimal.

As for Beryl, she’s a powerful hurricane. Currently a Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds, she’ll be heading toward the Caribbean islands downwind today. Islands like Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Tobago will be hit hard by the hurricane. It will then move into the Caribbean and likely weaken somewhat as it heads toward Jamaica on Wednesday. Then it will cross the Yucatan Peninsula and weaken back to a tropical storm. Some strengthening is possible as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. The big question is where it will head. While there is some agreement on a westerly track toward Mexico, I’d say it’s too early to commit to a specific direction. Much will depend on a ridge of high pressure as it moves eastward out of Texas. Where exactly will it end up and how strong will it be? There’s still a chance Texas could be affected by Beryl. So for now, we just have to wait and see. We will of course keep you updated!
