Realistic Step-Into-Your-Mind book wins Bolton Children’s Authors’ Award

The winner of the 2024 Bolton Children’s Fiction Award has been announced.

The prize was won by the book “When I See Blue” by children’s author Lily Bailey, which was described by one student as a “realistic book that lets you immerse yourself in the world of thought”.

One said: ‘Not only did this book really show me what it is like to suffer from OCD and completely change my understanding of it, it was also a well-written story full of fun, unexpected twists and suspense.

“This book is one of the most realistic books on the subject of ‘diving into one’s own soul’ that I have ever read.

“It really showed me his life and his experiences and helped me understand OCD much better.

“But it wasn’t just that, it also had some great plot points and a very exciting ending.”

Other shortlisted books included “While the Storm Rages” by Phil Earle and “Tyger” by SF Said.

These three novels were selected by the staff at Bolton School Library to provide enhanced reading enjoyment for students.

Winner Lily Bailey thanked everyone for the award in a virtual acceptance speech.

She said: “It has been so wonderful to be part of this awards ceremony and when I came to speak to you all you made me feel very welcome and you asked the most brilliant questions and were so open in sharing your experiences.

“Thank you to your amazing librarians and to Ebb & Flo Bookshop and all the staff who came together to promote the love of reading and make this event the wonderful event it was.”

Staff at Bolton School Library are currently working on a long list of six books for interested staff and students to enjoy over the summer holidays.

The shortlist for the 2025 prize will be determined from this selection.
