Britney Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart no longer represents the singer after the legal battle over her guardianship was concluded

Mathew Rosengart, the trial attorney who has represented Britney Spears for the past three years and successfully fought for her release from court-ordered conservatorship, is parting ways with the singer, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Rosengart’s resignation came after all legal disputes related to Spears’ former conservatorship were settled, restoring the pop star’s independence and releasing her from probate proceedings.

Two months ago, under Rosengart’s representation, Spears reached an agreement with her estranged father, avoiding a potentially heated trial and ending a bitter dispute over legal fees that had continued even after her conservatorship ended in November 2021.

With the settlement reached and all other outstanding issues related to Spears’ legal dispute resolved, Rosengart, who works as a partner at the Los Angeles law firm Greenberg Traurig, can now focus on his heavy caseload for other clients, the source said.

At the time of the settlement, Rosengart told CNN, “It has been an honor and a privilege to represent, protect and defend Britney Spears,” calling her an “icon and a brilliant and courageous artist of historic and epic proportions.”

Rosengart did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the end of his collaboration with Spears.

Spears hired Rosengart – a former federal prosecutor – in the summer of 2021 after working with a court-appointed attorney during most of her conservatorship, which was granted to her in 2008.

Rosengart proved to be a key figure in Spears’ efforts to end her conservatorship. She has often credited him with protecting her and giving her back her civil liberties. Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, served as the singer’s conservator for most of the 13-year conservatorship, overseeing his adult daughter’s finances and medical decisions.

In June 2021, Spears made explosive testimony in court, begging the judge to release her from conservatorship, which she said was “abusive.”

“I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and enough is enough,” Spears told the judge. She claimed that she was forced by her management and her father to tour against her will, was not allowed to drink coffee, was given lithium that made her feel “drunk,” and was not allowed to marry or have a child as she wished.

In July 2021, Spears testified again and tearfully pleaded with the judge to lift her father’s conservatorship. The court then decided to assign Spears her own lawyer. She hired Rosengart to handle the case.

Within two months of working with Rosengart, the court suspended Spears’ father as her conservator and ultimately terminated the conservatorship less than two months later.

Rosengart – who has also represented Hollywood greats such as Sean Penn and Steven Spielberg in legal matters – was hailed as a hero by countless #FreeBritney supporters and became a significant figure in the entire legal battle. As Spears’ case gripped the world, the lawyer was frequently the subject of memes and viral posts on social media, and was dubbed the “RosenGod” by some fans.

Spears and Rosengart have a close bond that is atypical of a normal attorney-client relationship.

When Rosengart was hired in July 2021, Spears posted on Instagram, “Now that I’m truly represented… I feel GRATEFUL and BLESSED!!!!” In February 2022, the star shared a photo of the two in matching pink outfits and wrote, “This man has turned my life upside down.”

In her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” published last year, Spears wrote that Rosengart’s legal strategy helped her win in court. “He told me I deserved credit for what happened,” Spears wrote in the book.

Since her conservatorship was terminated, Spears has published her memoir and released two singles: “Hold Me Closer” with Elton John and “Mind Your Business” with will.i.am. She has also married and divorced fitness trainer and actor Sam Asghari.

During Spears’ legal battle, lawsuits have made numerous allegations against her father that he abused his role as guardian and misappropriated funds. Spears has always maintained that he committed no wrongdoing and said the court approved every step of the conservatorship. When Spears reached a settlement with her father last April, his lawyer Alex Weingarten told CNN that he would have “liked to have a trial so the truth could come out.”

“Jamie would love nothing more than to disclose all the details and he has nothing to hide, but unfortunately that is not the case,” Spears’ father’s lawyer said, adding that he “loves his daughter very much and has worked tirelessly to protect her.”

But Spears wanted to put an end to her long-running legal battle.

“As she requested, her freedom now includes no longer having to appear in court or be involved with the court in this matter,” Rosengart told CNN in April.

“Although the guardianship ended in November 2021, her wish for freedom has now truly been fulfilled,” he said.
