Club swimmers heat up the pool this summer

The last month has been unbearably hot, but that may not be the case for athletes competing in the pool this summer.

The YMCA club swimmers from Waynesboro, Chambersburg and Hagerstown have all “stayed cool” over the past few weeks and have each taken part in a competition in which they were able to boast at least one individual winner.

The Waynesboro Area YMCA participated in the Keystone Aquatics Memorial Day Classic and was highlighted by the performance of Mady Barker, who won the 200 medley in the 13-14 age group with a time of 2:33.02.

Penny Richardson of the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA was a star at the MA CC Chargers Challenge Long Course in Mercersburg. Richardson, competing in the 11-12 division, won both the 50 backstroke (34.68) and 200 butterfly (2:56.81). For boys in the 15+ division, Amir Tasker of Chambersburg won the 100 freestyle in 54.07.

Finally, the YMCA of Hagerstown Gators produced a pair of 10-year-old champions at the CAC Out of School Meet in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Haley Fuss won the 50m butterfly in 39.91, while Addie Philp conquered the 200m individual medley in 3:38.99.

Some of the region’s best swimmers are eligible to compete in the YWCA National Long Course Championships, held in Florida from July 30 to August 3.
