For the second year in a row, South Dakota State has prevailed over rival South Dakota in a head-to-head matchup in the Interstate Series. The Jackrabbits won the 2023-24 edition by a score of 14-12, matching the previous season’s record.

The 2023-24 athletics season marks the first time the competition has been sponsored by First Interstate Bank. The Interstate Series is presented in association with Learfield and its respective divisions, Jackrabbit Sports Properties and Coyote Sports Properties.

SDSU now holds a 7-5 overall lead in the series dating back to the 2012-13 track and field season. The contest has been decided by two points or less seven times and neither school has won the title more than two consecutive seasons.

“The Interstate Series is what college sports are all about – bringing passionate fans and competitive teams together,” said Jonathan Treiber, general manager of Jackrabbit Sports Properties. “We appreciate the support and vision of First Interstate Bank in allowing us to grow this rivalry for many years to come.”

SDSU earned two points in three different sports, winning the football game between the top 10 teams on Oct. 28, 2023, and winning the regular season series in men’s and women’s basketball. The Jackrabbits also earned points in head-to-head matches in women’s soccer and softball and earned additional points by finishing higher at the Summit League championship events in men’s cross country, men’s golf and women’s golf.

Both degree programs were awarded three additional points for their academic achievements.
