Should the Hornets copy Spurs’ Chris Paul move and trade for Russell Westbrook?

Should the Hornets copy Spurs’ Chris Paul move and trade for Russell Westbrook?

The San Antonio Spurs signed a contract with the experienced guard Chris Paul in free agencyShould the Charlotte Hornets follow suit and sign former MVP Russell Westbrook?

According to recent reports, the LA Clippers will act Westbrook sometime this summer, and the longtime veteran has played his final game in a Clippers jersey.

It may not seem like much sense, but if Westbrook is happy with a role on the bench, adding him to the Hornets’ team could help in many ways.

The Spurs signed Paul as a helper Victor Wembanyama. Paul is one of the best passers in NBA history and playing alongside a 7-foot-4 giant like Wembanyama would be a dream for him.

Wembanyama will help make up for Paul’s defensive deficiencies, and in return, Paul will allow Wembanyama to make some of the easiest baskets of his life.

Even if the relationship between Westbrook and the Hornets weren’t quite as clear-cut, there would still be huge benefits to bringing him on board.

First and foremost, he could be a great mentor for LaMelo Ball. Considering where he’s been, people love having Westbrook as a teammate. He may not always be the best on the court, but (maybe outside of the Los Angeles Lakers) he’s been a great locker room guy.

Of course, Lakers fans would resent the idea, as mentioned, but he was great at his other stops. Former Washington Wizards forward Deni Avdija raved about Westbrook’s impact during their time together, and who says he couldn’t do the same for Ball, Brandon Miller and Mark Williams?

Westbrook’s lack of consistent three-point shooting would hurt the team’s lineup, but he is still a great playmaker and a top-notch rebounder for his position.

And if Ball gets injured, it would be a valuable asset for the Hornets to have an experienced NBA starter in reserve.

The fit may not be as perfect as Paul and Wembanyama, but signing Westbrook in Charlotte could benefit the team’s long-term success.
