Under the Tents 2024: X-Men ’97 Voice Actor, Kaveh Taherian, Jenny Frison, BeKyoot, Unknown Comics, Lev Grossman

Depending on where you are in the world, this could be the last Under the Tents in June 2024 or the very first in July 2024. No matter which side of the International Date Line you’re on, it’s still chock full of all kinds of useful SDCC information, including plenty of comic variant covers you can buy, a handful of voice actors signing autographs, authors on reading tours, enamel pins, and more. So jump right in, the waters are glorious!

Let’s take a look at the news:

  • Sometimes it’s not easy to find a booth by number. GG-07? SP F-21? 2345? We need landmarks, not letters and numbers! Well, it looks like BeKyoot is working on some cute signage and displays that can help you find them. They’re also a great photo asset! For those of you who don’t have navigation issues, you can find them at booth #2449.
  • Be amazed by this SDCC-exclusive variant cover for Zatanna: Bring Down the House #2 by virtuoso artist Jenny Frison. Brought to the convention by Comic Inspiration and Bird City Comics, this virgin foil variant cover is limited to 1,000 copies. You’ll have to shell out $30 to secure one.
  • ANZ Comics is partnering with Essential Sequential to release a handful of exclusive San Diego Comic-Con items from the master Art Adams. Although we have already seen their X-Men #1 (LE 3000) and Thundercats: Cheeara (LE 500 for both the Virgin cover and the Virgin sketch cover), you can pre-order them starting this Friday, July 5th at 10:00am PT on the ANZ Comics website.
  • A very, very limited San Diego Comic-Con exclusive “Game of Death” version of Tikumo by Gerald Okamura will be released on Wednesday, July 24th. The package is signed and numbered and limited to 15 pieces. The price is still to be determined.
  • The Her Universe Fashion Show never fails to impress with its couture, but also with its decor and lobby. According to these emojis, the Mattel-sponsored show will have a Polly Pocket-style lobby this year.
  • The God of Thunder always has to make an appearance. Chris Maze has depicted Thor The hammer will fall in this 3″ x 3″ original work, premiering at Comic-Con. The unique mixed media piece comes framed and is available at booth #2103.
  • Artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau will be doing commissioned work during San Diego Comic-Con, according to this video on Facebook. Watching Artgerm at work is a treat in itself.

  • Comic author and illustrator Dailen Ogden will have a new pin at San Diego Comic-Con based on her graphic novel Subscribe towhich you should also check out while you are there.
  • Illustrator for IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog And My little Pony Series, Natalie Haines, recently tweeted a new convention schedule has been released and SDCC is on the agenda. Stay tuned for more details!
  • The prime examples of parody, the Hillywood sisters, bring their Hillywood Show live to San Diego Comic-Con for book signings and a panel on Friday, July 27. Exact details should be announced two weeks before the event.
  • We have all been preparing for SDCC in our own way and it looks like artist Sean Forney spent his weekend preparing his Scarlet Huntress meets Mothman Limited edition boxes. These will make their trade show debut in San Diego at the Small Press K-03 booth.
  • The timing is perfect for New York Times bestselling author Lev Grossman (The Magicians, Silver Arrow) Grossman will be touring for his new book, The bright sworda new interpretation of the legend of King Arthur for the new millennium. His reading tour took him across the entire continent and ended in sunny San Diego, probably as part of Penguin Random House’s BookWorld. Further details to follow shortly.
  • Hidden in this Instagram post by artist Ray Caburnay is the announcement that he will be participating in a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 25. The topic, location, and time remain a secret for now.
  • Karen Hallion will have enamel pins for San Diego Comic-Con every day, but that’s not enough. She wants to finish this unfinished work of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn in the style of Klimt’s “The Kiss.” Let’s cheer Hallion on for this great idea and encourage her to finish it.
  • Unknown Comics has another eye-catching Nathan Szerdy variant cover that will be available at SDCC, this time it is a foil virgin variant for Phoenix #1. Booths #4901 and #2834 are the places to grab this one.
  • At Unknown Comics, not only will they be offering variants (though they have some of the best I’ve seen to date), but they’ll also have several comic book writers and voice artists on hand for book signings. The aforementioned Nathan Szerdy will be there, as will artist David Nakayama. You can find them both at booth #4901.
  • The Cartoon Voices panel is traditionally one of the best attended and most entertaining panels at San Diego Comic-Con. Thanks this tweetwe now know that voice actor Piotr Michael (Adventures of young Jedi) will participate.
  • Over in Artist Alley, at booth #BB-02, you’ll find author and illustrator Kaveh Taherian bringing some SDCC exclusives, including two brand new prints featuring his Original characters reinterpreted in the style of two of his favorite artists, John Romita Jr. and Bruce Timm.
  • Memoirist Soizick Jaffre makes a stop at the Stacked deck press Booth #2144, where you can find copies of her graphic novel A good sport.
  • Marat Mychaels posted on Facebook a couple Deadpool and Wolverine inspired variant covers for Are you saying pooh?

  • Marvel and DC cover artist Chris Hardin has released his summer schedule on Facebook, and San Diego Comic-Con has made it. See you there, Chris!

  • And finally, artist Adi Granov won’t be too hard to spot at SDCC today. Just look for this huge banner showcasing the art of his variant cover for X-Men #1 which will also be a con exclusive from Trinity Comics.
