Windham County man extradited for manslaughter, assault and more: police

Windham County man Walter Lawson – a native of the town of Putnam – was arrested on three warrants, Connecticut State Police announced Friday, June 28.

Lawson is accused of several crimes from September 2023 to May 2024.

On September 26, 2023, Lawson and another man got into an argument at a home in Thompson. Initially, the argument began with the two men yelling at each other, but soon escalated, and some witnesses saw the victim hit Lawson.

He then pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed the victim – who was not named by police – in the chest. Lawson fled the scene; the victim drove to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after stumbling into the hospital lobby.

Just one day later, on September 27, 2023, police caught a teenager backing his car into another vehicle near the area where investigators believe the stabbing took place. The teenager attempted to flee the scene and even accelerated when he saw the officer’s car.

He was eventually caught and confessed to police that he had bought cocaine from Lawson.

During a search, police found that Lawson allegedly possessed powder cocaine, crack cocaine, scales and other paraphernalia commonly used to manufacture narcotics.

Then, on May 10, 2024, Lawson was accused of ordering another drug dealer to stab a woman under the pretense that she had stolen drugs from Lawson. She was beaten and eventually stabbed in the leg.

Overall, Lawson is accused of:

  • Homicide;
  • Possession of narcotics with the intent to sell them to persons under 18 years of age;
  • Possession of narcotics; and
  • Conspiracy to attack.

He was ordered to post $1,525,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on Friday, June 28.
