Michigan State’s Tyson Walker scores in NBA Summer League

Tyson Walker gets a chance at an NBA team owned by another Spartan.

The former Michigan State guard, who was not selected in the 2024 NBA Draft this week, is joining the Phoenix Suns for the summer league, the Spartans announced Sunday afternoon.

Mat Ishbia, the former Michigan State walk-on guard and CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage, purchased the Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury for $4 billion in December 2022.

Walker, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound New York native, spent two seasons at Northeastern before transferring to Michigan State. After arriving as a point guard, he played both backcourt positions and started 96 of 104 games for the Spartans over the past three years.

Walker averaged 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game last season. The 23-year-old was selected by the coaches and media to the All-Big Ten second team for the second consecutive year.

Michigan State has now gone through two consecutive NBA drafts without having a player selected. In addition to Walker, forward Malik Hall is also looking for an opportunity and has trained with several teams after five years in East Lansing.

The Suns will play in the Summer League in Las Vegas from July 12 to 22.
