Camden Yacht Club hears “A year-long transatlantic sailing adventure”

CAMDEN – Camden native and former CYC member Jamie Van Alstine and his wife, Jill Peacock, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick, will share their family’s 2023-2024 transatlantic voyage during a free Sunset Seminar talk on Wednesday, July 10 at 7 p.m. at the Camden Yacht Club.

The couple, who sailed over 8,000 miles last year, will plan their journey from the UK to Maine via the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and the Caribbean. Van Alstine and Peacock, who live in the UK, have sailed “home” on their Chuck Paine-designed Bowman. Cupid, to share her childhood sailing area with her two daughters.

Van Alstine and Peacock are lifelong sailors based in the UK. They have sailed extensively in Northern Europe, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, the East Coast of the USA and Atlantic Canada. Their usual summer haunt is the West Coast of Scotland. After touring Maine in July, they will head to Canada and finally Scotland, where they will settle after a year off from their jobs.

Van Alstine is an associate professor of environmental policy at the University of Leeds and Jill is a marketing director at a consulting firm. Van Alstine is originally from Camden and taught outdoor education at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School for nearly a decade. Peacock is originally from Saint John, New Brunswick and grew up on boats on the Saint John River and Bay of Fundy. They have two girls, Ella (11) and Alexandra (6), who earned their sea legs on this family adventure.

The Yacht Club, located at 68 Bay View Street, hosts the non-profit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP), which is open to all young people in the community. Voluntary donations to CAYSP’s generous scholarships, which make sailing lessons affordable for all, will be gratefully accepted at the seminar.
